Yes it's true - Shoegazer is rebranding and moving house! I decided it was time to take everything I've learnt about blogging and create a more coheasive, streamlined blog. I also wanted to create a blog more focussed on supporting the webshop (Lily in the Labyrinth) that will be opening soon: So, Lily in the Labyrinth will now be the name of my shop and blog. Please visit the link and please do let me know any feedback you have about the new layout/format etc etc.

I may still update Shoegazer from time to time with random musings and finds so check back from time to time if you can :) I've loved keeping this blog over the years but really feel ready to move to the next level and combine shop and blog branding.

1. What is your dream job?

To set up and run my own magazine, bringing together a really creative team and producing something gorgeous to look at, honest, inspiring and unpretentious to read and something that readers love to keep, revisit and re-read!

2. What is your favourite fragrance for winter?

My favourite fragrance for all times of the year is Chanel Chance Eau Fraiche because it smells clean, fresh, light and luxurious! I’m not a fan of heavy fragrances so this one is perfect.

3. How do you take your tea/coffee?

I don’t. The only hot drink to pass my lips is hot chocolate :) yum!

4. What is your most important beauty secret?

Don’t skimp on skincare! Invest in a good cleanser (I religiously use Liz Earle’s Hot Cloth Cleanser); Find out your skin type so you can buy products to suit.

5. If you had an all-expenses paid vacation anywhere, where would you go?

Japan! I would LOVE to visit Japan, especially when all the cherry blossom is out. Also Australia to see what all the fuss is about! But, to be honest, anywhere warm, sunny and nice would do as I haven’t been on holiday since 2006! Argh!

6. If a genie popped up in your lap right now and offered you three wishes, what would they be?

Long, happy, healthy lives for my family and friends (and me please).

Success in my career.

To pass my upcoming driving test!

7. If you could only have breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert foods for the rest of your life, which would you pick?

Hmm, tough one! Lunch I think because of the variety and the fact it can consist of dessert as well (round off your lunch with a little cake or a yoghurt.... WINNER) Heh-heh....mmm, lunch. Om nom nom nom nom.

8. If you were Hello Kitty, what colour hair bow would you wear?

Purple or Gunmetal coloured.

9. What is your biggest make-up pet peeve?

Over-plucked / over-drawn eyebrows and thick, clumpy mascara.

10. If you could wear only one piece of jewellery for the rest of your life, what would it be?

That would be awful! I LOVE jewellery. Why... why would you ask me this? WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE WORLD? Won't somebody think of the children... *eherm* Probably the silver bracelet I never take off.

11. What one talent do you wish you had?

Dress making / bitchin’ sewing machine skills.

(can't use a sewing machine? just wear a sewing machine round your neck instead... we're all winners here.)

12. Which product will you continue to purchase?

The Liz Earle product I mentioned – since I started using it I have converted both my mum and boyfriend to using it too (well, bf uses the male version)!

13. If you could look into the future, would you? And what would you want to know?

I don’t think I would, I might see something upsetting.

14. Who is your biggest celebrity crush? Include pictures

I quite liked Sam Riley in the film Control and the Burberry adverts he did. ULTIMATE MIND-CRUSH = Robert Smith of The Cure.

15. What made you start a blog?

I wanted a place to log my creative projects and all the inspirational things I found on my web adventures and to be able to share them with other likeminded folk.

Shoegazer Haul: Fox brooch

I was lucky enough to get this sweet little fox brooch for Christmas from one of my best friends. It had been on my radar for a while but was a complete surprise when I got it as a present :) The face is made of painted polymer clay, whilst the ears and tail and corduroy and the whole thing is attached to antique-style brass setting. These were available on etsy from Helis, but the shop has since shut whilst the owner has a baby.

Here is a roundup of some of the lovely things I’ve come into the possession of recently – whether through receiving them as presents or treating myself to them . . .

Antique wooden peg doll (late 1800s/early 1900s?):

As I have mentioned here before, I have been on the lookout for an antique, wooden peg doll since I was a little girl and used to love watching a little cartoon called Pinny’s House which told the story of a little peg doll that came to life and had adventures. Having had no luck whatsoever finding a peg doll in the many antique shops I visit, I decided to turn to eBay and my luck was in. I won an auction for not one but TWO antique peg dolls, one of which I kept and one my mum now owns as she had been looking for one too. Naturally, my doll is called Pinny :)

Goat figure:

In October 2010 my brother and his partner moved to Hong Kong following my brother’s promotion at work, so for Christmas I was treated to some unusual little finds they had come across in a shop they said would be right up my street. Firstly, this little goat is a very good representation of a real goat (but hopefully not made of real goat fur?? THE HORROR!) and my brother said he couldn't resist getting it for as goats were my favourite animal when we were little.

Green Chalcedony Ring:

LOVE! I got this faceted Green Chalcedony ring as a Christmas present and have rarely taken it off since! The aqua tone of the green is beautiful and the unpolished silver setting gives it an edge.
Jointed wooden bear:
This jointed wooden bear (which reminds me slightly of the Black Forest bears) sits quite happily wherever I chose to place him and is a lovely addition to my collection of homeware and ornaments. He was another gift from Hong Kong.

Antique typewriter (1920s?)

I got this amazing piece of vintage writing machinery for my 25^th birthday back in September 2010 as a present from my parents. I love it, but it is incredibly heavy! I can't wait to find the perfect place for it when I get my own place :)

Fractured humerus - Clothing tutorial!

Please note: This post is out of character for this blog, however I thought it might help someone out there. Please excuse the awful diagrams/illustrations - like I said - it's not a usual blog post but rather a straight-forward step-by-step guide for possibly non-crafty people.

On Christmas Eve, my boyfriend slipped on an icy pavement and landed with his full weight on his left arm, snapping his humerus bone clean in two! *Shudder* Aside from all the other misery this is causing him, it is hard to find clothes that work with his current situation. He has to wear over-sized t-shirts that fit over the entire arm, leaving his broken arm under the t-shirt, in the sling, against his body.

Having the sling, hand and lower arm constantly against his body was beginning to rub him, so I put my thinking cap on and came up with a solution – a vest which could slide up under the arm/sling and be fastened on the shoulder - a bit like a baby grow.

So for anyone out there with a broken upper arm and a sore torso due to a rubbing sling or too much flesh-on-flesh contact, here is my step-by-step tutorial on how to make the vest:
Tutorial:

Step One: Get a basic vest (I got a pack of two from Primark for £4.50)

Step Two: For which ever arm is affected (in my boyfriend's case it is the left arm), cut through that shoulder hoop of the vest straight across - you are not removing any fabric, just cutting a line straigh across. Follow the shoulder seam and you can't go wrong.

Step Three: You chould now have separated the front section of the shoulder hoop from the back section across the top of the shoulder, along the seam. In the illustration I have moved the cut line forward slightly just to show the straight cut.

Step Four: Blanket stitch along the cut edges on the front and back parts of the shoulder hoop. Find a blanket stich tutorial here - it's a very fast and easy stitch! Then, sew corresponding parts of popper closures (aka: snap fastenings / press studs) where the blue dots are.

Step Five: Snap the poppers shut and you vest is complete!

Step Six: To wear, open the poppers to widen the top of the vest then step into the vest and pull it up over your body then feed it under the sling and up to the shoulder. Fasten the poppers and VOILA! (You could of course also put the vest over your head and pull it down past your sling then under and up to the shoulder if you prefer)

Step Seven: Enjoy the relief from rubbing (and please excuse my truly awful drawings of your troubles!)

I really hope that helps someone out there, please let me know if you have stumbled across this blog post and found it useful as it would make my day.

My first piece of Jonathan Adler

Here it is, my very first piece of Jonathan Adler pottery! I've been wanting something by Alder for a few years now ever since I saw his Love, Hate etc storage jars from the Druggist range, but the pieces are often pretty pricey and, as he is an American designer, not that easy to find in the UK. So I was incredibly happy to spot this lovely item entitled This Is Not A Pipe in the Heals sale:

It's a tealight holder made from translucent porcelain meaning that when you light your tealight the bowl of the pipe glows softly. What's more, it fits in beautifully with my homeware theme of "English Eccentric" which I have blogged about in the past :)

Shoegazer Fashion: Abstract prints

This season I am in love with abstract / smudge print garments. I can't put my finger on why exactly, but all I know is I can't get enough! Here are some images from various "look books" to illustrate my current fashion fad :)

Above: This outfit is from the Ermie look book and I just love the pairing of the bold, smudge-print skirt with the muted, delicate print grey top.

Above: These two outfits from the Wilfred look book are beautiful. The outfit on the right is definately a look I would wear for everyday activities. The smudge-print skirt features large, draped pockets at either side, making it practical and teaming it with a chunky knit cardi and opaque tights makes it perfect for this cold weather. WANT.

Above: This abstract print top is from the wonderful Anthropologie and is a garment I actually own :D The deliciously soft, cowl-neck top features twists of fabric (embellished with little bronze beads) that add unusual lines to the garment. The print reminds me somewhat of Alexander McQueen's famous animal/reptile print collection (see here for what I mean). Anyway, I love it.

Above & Below: These outfits are from a Something Else / Natalie Wood look book. I adored the whole look book but these two outfits to me look very wearable and really opitomise the style direction I wanted to go in this Winter.

A great way to display...

As you may be able ot tell from this blog, I do a LOT of etsy browsing and have to say it's really refreshing to come across a shop with great product display. One shop with a cute twist on product display is MemiTheRainbow. I particularly love the way she displays her fabric-covered buttons and can just imagine these sweet little product display cards nestled on a shelf in a little highstreet boutique.

For another cute piece of product display, these Sardine/Herring felt brooches are pictured snug in a sardine tin, and jumping from the tin onto a jacket lapel.... ingenius!

DIY: Christmas Tissue Pom Poms

A festive tutorial for you all now! These tissue-paper pom poms would make great decorations for any party or event you're throwing - or even just a nice adornment to a room in your house. But what better time of year to get decoration-happy than in the run up to Christmas? This DIY tutorial is from the kidspot.com.au website and was found on the lovely Happy Home blog. Let's get started...

You'll need:

Tissue paper / Thin string or cotton / Thicker string for stringing together / Large needle / Scissors

Pics from top left: 1. Equipment needed 2. Layer sheets of tissue paper and fold 3. Tie the middle with string 4. Round the edges with scissors 5. Fluff out each side of the pom pom 6. A finished pom pom

Step One

Layer six sheets of tissue paper and cut to around 15cm by 20cm. Starting with the short side, fold the full length of the pile into a concertina fold (so it's like a paper fan).

Step Two

Tie the middle with a short piece of string.

Step Three

Round the edges with a pair of scissors.

Step Four

Fan open one side and gently pull apart each individual sheet of tissue paper until they're evenly spaced. Be very careful here as they do tear easily and can be quite tricky to separate.

Step Five

Repeat on the other side and fluff out until the pom pom looks even and round. Thread together with the needle and thick string - leaving your desired length in-between - and wrap around the tree.

I've just seen the trailer for Black Swan and now can’t wait to see it. The costumes, the makeup and even the posters are perfect!

Many of the costumes in the film were created by Rodarte and just how stunning they look. But what first caught my attention was the striking black swan makeup seen on Natalie Portman here:

Mmm, jewellery.... how I love you. A little etsy browsing earlier today lead me to Babette. Run by a Central St Martins trained fashion designer now living in the US, Babette sells really beautiful pieces often involving gem-coloured garnetts. These hoop earrings (below) definately caught my eye! I love the colour tones used... from purple to peacock!

It was my birthday last month and my very good friends got me the perfect gift - this absolutely amazing vintage fold-out camera! I love it, and so do the Shoegazer robots . . .

You can't hear them, but those robots are cooing over that vintage technology as only robots can.

This camera is the perfect addition to my homeware collection as I plan to display a variety of quirky items like this when I eventually get my own place. It fits brilliantly with my theme of "English Eccentric with a vintage sci-fi twist"(...yeah it IS a theme. 'Cos I say so.)

Shoegazer visits: Pollock's Toy Museum

Last weekend I went to Pollock's Toy Museum in London. I'd been wanting to visit since I found out about it last year (see this post on the Imaginarium Doctor Parnassus), so was happy to finally get there and experience it for myself. Some of the pictures aren't the best quality, but the light was very awkward in there - the items were in glass cases in dark rooms with the sun streaming through the windows - but I've done my best to share the experience with you and hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Oh yes and be warned, some of the toys and dolls featured here may well give you nightmares! Haha...

I hope you found those photos interesting :) I adore the antique peg dolls and have been looking for one for YEARS. Oh well, one day... Also fell in love with the Pearly King and Queen dolls. I have a soft spot for anything to do with Pearly Kings and Queen - I just love the old English eccentric charm of them.

MAC Collection: Venomous Vilians

Time for another MAC collection and collaboration, this time with Disney. In stores around Halloween time in the UK (and right now in the US I believe), the Venomous Vilians collection celebrates some of the most notorious and iconic baddies from Disney films. Vilians who now can boast their own make up range include Sleeping Beauty's arch nemisis Maleficent, the stylin' Evil Queen from Snow White, Cruella De Vil and the most recent vilian, Dr Facilier (some dude from The Princess and the Frog).

Now, whilst all these are fabulous vilians (I can't comment on Dr Facilier as I haven't seen the film yet), my first hope when I heard of the collection was that there would be an Ursula range! For some reason she is my favourite Disney vilian and although she's not such a looker as, say, the Evil Queen, the scene where she pops open a little fish thing and uses it as a lipstick always bounces round my head whenever I apply a femme fatal shade of red. MAC, you missed a trick!

(I mean, come on - look at her bitchin' 80s make up!)

Anyway, I look forward to the collection hitting the shops and will be sure to pop by a MAC store for a peek at the products and their ~wicked~ packaging.

PS. Kudos to MAC for embracing Halloween! So few UK companies bother...

It just so happens I was planning to do a post about some beautiful headbands from ban.do, modelled by Alison Sudol. Small world!

I love the dark green of the background which makes her hair colour really pop. And how pretty are those headbands? They seem like things you might find in an old trunk in a forgotten corner of your Grandma's attic.... (if life was exciting like that.)

There is light at the end of the tunnel! My boyfriend and I - who have for almost 6 years been suffering a long distance relationship due to our respective work locations - may be able to get our own place up in London before the end of the year as I am in the process of relocating my duties to my company's London office rather than their Southern office. This is so exciting for me for many reasons, one of the biggest (aside from finally living with my bf) is beng able to collect homeware knowing it will actually be put to use rather than just being left wrapped up and piled up in my room!

The first thing I did was come up with a style / theme I wanted for the living room. I don't know how to describe what I have in my mind other than:

"English eccentric with a vintage sci fi twist"

With that in mind, I set out on a buying mission and have decided to document my finds, wants and progress here on the blog. First up, an image from a home magazine that inspired me...

I love the whole composition here but particularly the wooden hand holding the pen. So, inspired for a display, I bought a wooden, artist's jointed hand like the ones below, from eBay:

I am also on the lookout for a nice vintage typewriter - as I have been for about a year. I haven't found the perfect one (at the perfect price) yet though! Watch this space.

Above: I fell in love with this antique wooden side table instantly! The birds engraved in the wood are perfect! I love that it seems they were once a pale blue colour but the paint has worn away. I am so pleased with this purchase!

Shoegazer Loves: PIGEONS!

Do you know what's underrated? Pigeons! Flying rodents they are not. They are birds through and through. They can't help it that there are a lot of them (well, they could help it if there were sex-ed classes for birds). They can't help it that the city-dwelling ones get grubby... if anything that's our fault for polluting. They can't even help it that occasionally they need to poo... from a great height... into your hair/sandwich/best dress. Shit happens (see what I did there??). So lay off them!

I hate it when I see one limping around on a stumpy, broken foot, and when I see a kid running screaming at a poor pigeon I feel like giving the brat a taste of his or her own medicine and running screaming at them... with an axe. (Ok, maybe not with an axe.)

Fellow pigeon lover Debbie Hill (who I blogged about here) maintains the lovely Pigeons Aren't Perfect (see image below)... which instantly melted my heart because, as you now know, I have long championed the cause of the pigeons.

Last summer a pigeon-baby was born on my window sill and I watched it grow from egg to fledgeling bird (man, they look freaky as babies). Anyway, that prompted me to make a pigeon plushie . . . Now, this pigeon certainly isn't perfect, but it took an age to make and was a great learning experience at the time as I was new to 3D plushies. See whut choo fink ...

Not only is the colour of Frankly Fresh bang on trend by being a soft apricot colour, but the packaging is so sweet!
